By far the most conservative type of guitar design the dimensions of the Classical rarely stray from the traditional. The variety of tones available within the range comes from the different types of wood used in construction, with Cedar being the most common choice for soundboard. Classicals produce a much softer sound than steel string models with the wide flat fretboard lending itself to fingerpicking styles far more than strumming.
